Increased connectivity with electricity in the rural Sub-saharan Region of Africa especially Kenya has led to the automation of farm processes. This has subsequently led to increased incidence of severe injuries from the machines ranging from severe cuts to amputation of fingers and limbs. Many people have lost parts of their limbs arising from such accidents. The good news is something can be done to prevent the accidents. Silas Njeru, 29 an occupational therapist at Embu Level V hospital offers the following tips to prevent farm machine injuries.
- If you are using a chaff cutter and other machines with moving parts, it is advised that you install a grill between the cutting parts and operating table to avoid getting into contact with the cutting or moving parts of the machines.
- One should ensure that they do not wear loose clothing while operating the machines especially on the hands since the machines have been designed to pull materials. When these clothes are pulled it becomes inevitable to avoid an injury.
- Ensure that the machine's switch is as close as possible to the operating area. That way, if someone’s clothes or body parts get trapped in the machine, they can easily switch off the machine with the other hand before damage occurs.
- Do not operate the machinery if you are intoxicated with alcohol. Intoxication increases the likelihood of sustaining an injury while operating the machines.
- Undergoing proper training before using the machines and ensuring that only trained persons are allowed to use them helps to reduce the injuries.
